Challenges in Scaling Up Greenhouse Gas Fluxes: Experience From the UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Feedbacks Program

چکیده
The role of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in global climate change is now well recognized and there a clear need to measure emissions verify the efficacy mitigation measures. To this end, reliable estimates are needed GHG balance at national scale over long time periods, but these difficult make accurately. Because measurement techniques generally restricted relatively small spatial temporal scales, fundamental problem translating into long-term on regional scale. key challenge lies upscaling short-term, point observations estimate large-scale annual totals, quantify uncertainty associated with upscaling. Here, we review some approaches synthesize work recent UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions Feedbacks Program, which was designed identify address challenges. Approaches scaling included: instrumentation developments mean that near-continuous data sets can be produced larger coverage; geostatistical methods extrapolating domains, using information data; more rigorous statistical characterize longer scales; analytical estimating model aggregation error; enhanced C flux novel uses remote sensing calibrate process models for generating probabilistic estimates.

Greenhouse gas emissions from rice
Rice provides the staple food for over 60% of the world’s population. Globally 80% of rice is grown by small farmers in low income and developing nations, and in India rice farming is a key source of employment for the 60% of Indian workers still dependent on agriculture for work. Yet rice production is also an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, for example responsible for between 3 ...
متن کاملGreenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets from Agriculture: Opportunities and Challenges
s the scientifi c evidence of global climate change continues to accumulate (IPCC, 2007) and the predicted impacts of a warming planet become more widely known, national policies and international agreements designed to mitigate global warming have sought to strike a balance between environmental sustainability and economic achievement. Agriculture is at the center of this balancing act. On the...

In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that only 6.4% of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originated from agriculture. Of this amount, 53.5% comes from animal agriculture. Agricultural activities are the largest source of N2O emissions in the U.S. accounting for 69% of the total N2O emissions for 2009. In animal agriculture, the greatest contributor to methane emissions ...
متن کاملLinkage of greenhouse gas emissions trading systems: learning from experience
The last ten years have seen the growth of linkages between many of the world’s cap-and-trade systems for greenhouse gases (GHGs), both directly between systems, and indirectly via connections to credit systems such as the Clean Development Mechanism. If nations have tried to act in their own self-interest, this proliferation of linkages implies that for many nations, the expected benefits of l...
